Perhilitan, MBI Set Traps to Address Wild Monkeys at Gunung Lang

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: Traps have been installed in the surrounding areas of Gunung Lang Recreational Park as an initial control measure to reduce disturbances caused by hill or wild monkeys there.

In a statement by the Ipoh City Council (MBI), the last complaint related to wild monkey disturbances was received and reported to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) in August last year.

“Following the issue of wild monkey disturbances at Gunung Lang Recreational Park, MBI would like to inform that we have taken control measures through strategic cooperation with Perhilitan.

“This wild monkey issue is not only occurring at Gunung Lang Recreational Park, but also involves other areas in Ipoh, including residential neighbourhoods, roads, and other public areas.

“MBI has always worked closely with the Perhilitan Department in efforts to address the issue of wild monkey disturbances throughout the administrative area of Ipoh City,” the statement said last night.

It added that through this collaborative relationship, MBI will continue to seek optimal and efficient solutions to curb the issue from becoming more widespread.

“The issue of wild animal disturbances not only disrupts recreational activities and tarnishes the image and reputation of tourist areas, but also has a negative impact on public safety, as it constitutes a form of nuisance within the community.

“MBI will continue to maintain ongoing cooperation with relevant departments and agencies, as well as involve concerned local communities, to obtain effective and optimal solutions for the well-being and safety of Ipoh residents,” the statement further explained.

Previously, the media reported public concern among visitors to Gunung Lang Recreational Park over the presence of many aggressive hill monkeys that pose a danger to visitors.

In addition, many suggested that the authorities conduct patrols and tighten security measures in the area to ensure there are no further incidents of visitors being chased or facing frightening situations involving these wild animals.

Many netizens on social media also agreed, sharing their experiences of encountering aggressive monkeys, with some allegedly having been injured by groups of the animals.
