More Than 20 Years of Gerbang Malam, a New Look with Integrated Roofing and Lighting Awaits

IPOH: After more than 20 years as one of Ipoh’s iconic tourism landmarks, Gerbang Malam is set to unveil a new, iconic and more competitive look in the near future.

This comes in line with the implementation of roof upgrading works and an integrated lighting system to ensure greater comfort for visitors and traders alike, including improved ventilation.

“For a long time, Gerbang Malam has been a focal point for local visitors and foreign tourists, offering a unique experience that combines a lively atmosphere, visual appeal, and a wide variety of products and entertainment.

“However, with the increasing number of visitors and changing current needs, aspects of comfort, safety and visual appeal must be enhanced to ensure it remains relevant as a leading night tourism destination.

“In this regard, a funding application amounting to RM3 million has been submitted under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (RMKe-13) through the Ministry of Tourism to carry out construction and upgrading works for the Gerbang Malam roof,” said the Ipoh City Council (MBI).

The scope of the project involves connecting and strengthening the existing roof structure to create more comprehensive, sturdy and safe coverage.

The modern roof design will not only function as protection from the weather, but is also designed to maintain good ventilation.

“The project also includes upgrading the lighting system with an aesthetic, tourist-friendly concept.

“Strategically planned lighting will highlight Gerbang Malam’s identity as a city icon of light, creating a more attractive, safe and conducive nighttime atmosphere for economic and social activities,” the statement said.

It added that the initiative will open up more economic opportunities for the local community, particularly small traders and local entrepreneurs.

“Gerbang Malam is now entering a new phase, no longer merely a stopover point, but a destination that reflects the aspirations of national tourism development.

“Under the night lights illuminating its new structure, Gerbang Malam continues to stand as a symbol of hope, progress and the pulse of city life that never fades,” it said.
