Ipoh Stables Market made its debut recently at the Perak Turf Club, marking a new chapter for the city with a concept billed as Asia’s first stable market. The grand opening unfolded in festive fashion, with lion and dragon dances welcoming visitors into a space where former horse stables now give way to food, craft, coffee and community.
Set within the grounds of the Perak Turf Club, the market introduces a new way of experiencing a familiar landmark. What was once a working complex for racehorses has been reimagined as a public destination, allowing the public to experience the Turf Club from a completely new perspective.
The project forms part of the Perak Turf Club’s “More Than Racing” vision, opening up spaces that were previously off-limits and giving them new life. Rather than positioning itself as a one-off attraction, Ipoh Stables Market has been shaped for return visits, whether for a quick stop or a longer evening out.
At its core, the market exists to support local businesses, makers and creatives. It operates as a collective platform where new and returning Ipoh entrepreneurs stand side by side. Here they offer everything from local delicacies and handcrafted goods to creative services and community-driven experiences.
A strong youthful vibe runs through the market. Nearly 80 per cent of ISM’s vendors are under the age of 35, many of whom have returned from major cities or overseas to build something in Ipoh. Their energy brings a contemporary edge to the space.
With the map in hand, visitors can move easily from one section of the market to another, each offering a different experience. One end draws people in with coffee and casual local food. Other stretches open up into traditional market fare, handcrafted goods, shared dining spaces and pet-friendly corners.
Further along, flexible areas host exhibitions, programmes and pop-ups that shift from week to week, giving regular visitors a reason to return and rediscover the space each time.
Among the many must-visits is the Aquarium Club. It features paludarium rooms and a dedicated betta gallery with around 360 tanks. One of the most visually striking corners of the market, it has become a favourite with both children and adults.
Beyond food, the market opens up into a lively mix of plants, handmade crafts, art pieces, candles and apparel. This blend of craft and hobby-driven stalls gives Ipoh Stables Market its varied, walkable charm, where each turn offers something different to pause for.
You will also come across the Perak Discharged Prisoners Aid Society, offering quality bags, batik and handcrafted pieces created by inmates from across Perak. It is one of those stalls where you pause, browse, and walk away knowing your purchase carries a little more meaning.
That sense of openness runs through the entire market. Ipoh Stables Market welcomes everyone, with wide walkways, shaded corridors, ample parking and OKU-friendly facilities.
