GERIK, Perak — The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works, has approved a total allocation of RM75.086 million for maintenance works on the East‑West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur Barat, JRTB), spanning a total distance of 114.66 kilometres (km).

According to the Member of Parliament for Lenggong, Dato’ Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, the funding is crucial to ensure the safety and comfort of road users on this important route.

He explained that the maintenance works are being carried out in phases. So far, 19.8km of work valued at RM35 million has been completed in 2025, while another 23.2km section, costing RM40 million, is currently ongoing and expected to be carried out in 2026.

“I understand that the remaining stretches of the highway will also be maintained,” he said, adding that he believes the efforts will significantly enhance both safety and comfort for all users of the East‑West Highway.

Dato’ Shamsul Anuar made the remarks during an official visit by the Minister of Works, Dato’ Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, to the headquarters of the Public Works Department (JKR) in Hulu Perak, Gerik.

As Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, he also described the minister’s visit as a reaffirmation of the Government’s continuous commitment to prioritise road infrastructure in rural and interior areas.

The JRTB is a strategic thoroughfare connecting Perak with Kelantan, frequently used by residents, daily commuters and tourists. The maintenance works are seen as highly significant in supporting economic development and improving the well‑being of communities in the affected regions.

The federal government has also allocated additional funding for broader upgrades to the East‑West Highway, including road surface improvements, the strengthening of safety features and lighting enhancements under national development plans.
