IPOH: A total of 32 students and seven lecturers from Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) took part in a community service initiative at the Kallumalai Arulmigu Subramaniyar Temple here in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration.
The volunteer programme was organised to assist with preparations at the temple, including decoration and cleaning work ahead of the annual religious festival.
The activity, which began as early as 8am, saw close cooperation between the academic community and local residents.
In addition to cleaning duties, the volunteers were divided into several groups to help decorate the temple’s main area, providing them with an opportunity to experience and appreciate Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity.
PUO director Dr Hajah Salmi Che Meh, in a statement, expressed pride in the strong commitment demonstrated by both students and staff throughout the programme.
“This volunteer initiative at the Kallumalai Temple reflects PUO’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates who excel not only academically, but also possess emotional intelligence and empathy towards Malaysia’s multicultural society.
“Through direct involvement in such activities, students are able to instil values of harmony and social responsibility, which will serve as important assets when they enter the workforce in the future,” she said.
The PUO management also recorded its appreciation to the management of Kallumalai Arulmigu Subramaniyar Temple for their cooperation during the programme.
The warm reception and logistical support provided contributed to the smooth implementation of the activities.
Such programmes are expected to inspire other educational institutions to remain actively involved in community service initiatives, in line with efforts to strengthen ties between campuses and the wider community for shared well-being.
