From manhole cable thefts to utility poles: A new modus operandi emerges

By: Aida Aziz

IPOH — Previously, numerous cases were reported involving cable thefts from manholes around Ipoh, posing serious risks to road users.

Now, it appears that perpetrators have shifted their modus operandi by cutting and stealing wires or cables from utility poles in the early hours of the morning.

A complainant alleged that the latest incident occurred along Jalan Foo Ann Chon, Taman Hoover, recently at around 4 am.

“We are aware that Ipoh has recorded many cases of underground cable theft, but it now seems that they have begun cutting and stealing wires from utility poles located in back lanes. Is this becoming a common occurrence in Ipoh?

“This photo was provided by my neighbour as I was out of the area at the time. He said someone had cut the wires in the early morning, around 4 am.

“It is understood that they arrived in a van, entered the back lane, climbed onto the rooftop area and proceeded to cut the wires or cables,” he alleged.

As such, the resident urged the authorities to treat the issue seriously, as it involves public property and poses potential risks to public safety.
