IPOH: Peace is not something that endures automatically; it is like a flame that gives light and, if not carefully safeguarded, can be extinguished or rage out of control and destroy, said Perak Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad.

He said narrow sentiments can easily be ignited today, while divisive narratives spread rapidly, with racial and religious sentiments often being stoked as they are the easiest to inflame emotions and erode empathy.

“This state cannot be developed with directionless emotions. Progress cannot be built from a society surrounded by anger.

“The future cannot be forged on the embers of sentiments that burn away rationality. Future progress requires a society that strengthens one another, not weakens.

“We can be passionate, but that passion must be guided by wisdom. We can be courageous, but that courage must be led by empathy and conscience.

“Because believe me, in building a state, we do not only need a burning flame, but also a light that illuminates the path for all,” he said.

He said this in his royal address at the Perak State-Level Chinese New Year Celebration 2026 held at Stadium Indera Mulia today, which was graced by the presence of Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

Meanwhile, Saarani added that this year the Chinese community celebrates the Year of the Fire Horse.

In Eastern tradition and philosophy, the horse symbolises dynamic energy, the courage to move forward and agility in facing challenges.

“Thus, the Year of the Fire Horse teaches us an important lesson — that progress requires courage. But courage must be guided by wisdom,” he said.

He noted that for more than six decades, Malaysians have enjoyed peace and harmony in diversity, with children growing up without fear.

Neighbours greet one another without suspicion, and celebrations are observed without barriers — all symbols of peace built on the spirit of togetherness.

“Remember that this state and nation were not built on the flames of hatred. Instead, we use the flame as a light to guide our journey despite living in diversity.

“It is this light that unites our resolve in facing trials and challenges, and it is this light that illuminates our path in building progress.

“This is the spirit that drives the Malaysia Madani agenda and the momentum behind the Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan. We seek inclusive growth and fair opportunities.

“And development that ensures every race and every community moves forward together in the current of progress,” he said.

He also called on the public to strengthen their spirit without burning the bridges of unity and to drive change without ever sacrificing harmony.
