Helping Ipoh’s Stray Cats and Dogs One Paw at a Time

Noah’s Ark Ipoh hosts high-tea fundraiser to support rescue and welfare efforts

When Kino, a dog rescued in Kampar, was found, both her front limbs had already been chopped off.

The rescue required treatment from three veterinary clinics and cost thousands of ringgit, but the volunteers of Noah’s Ark Ipoh refused to give up on her.

Today, Kino remains under their care, adapting to life despite her injuries.

Her case is one of many faced by rescuers working to help stray cats and dogs across Ipoh.

Injured animals, abandoned kittens, litters of puppies and starving strays are situations volunteers encounter regularly across our city. Many of these cases require urgent veterinary care and long periods of recovery.

Now the organisation is calling on the community to support its upcoming High Tea fundraiser titled “Building Hope One Paw at a Time.”

The event will take place at Excelsior Hotel Ipoh on Sunday, April 19 from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, bringing together animal lovers and supporters for an afternoon dedicated to helping the city’s stray cats and dogs.

Guests can look forward to high tea, entertainment and lucky draw prizes, while contributing directly to rescue work, veterinary treatment and neutering programmes carried out by the organisation.

Companies and organisations are also encouraged to support the cause by purchasing tables for staff, clients or partners as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Many of the rescues taking place across the city are carried out by Noah’s Ark Ipoh, a nonprofit animal welfare organisation focused on reducing the stray population through humane rescue and neutering programmes.

The organisation operates through a small group of committed volunteers, many of whom juggle full time work while continuing to respond to rescue calls involving injured cats and dogs across the city.

They transport animals to veterinary clinics, arrange treatment and organise neutering programmes aimed at preventing the cycle of uncontrolled breeding.

Despite the scale of their work, the organisation operates without a dedicated dog shelter. Many rescued animals are placed in foster care or boarding arrangements while volunteers continue raising funds for treatment and feeding.

Some of the cases they encounter are deeply disturbing.

In addition to severely injured dogs, volunteers also rescue abandoned kittens, sick cats and animals left starving in residential areas and along highway stretches near Ipoh.

According to Malika Ramiah Oates, spokesperson for Noah’s Ark Ipoh, volunteers once carried out between 30 and 50 neutering procedures each month, helping control the population of stray cats and dogs across the city.

However, maintaining those efforts has become increasingly difficult due to limited resources and manpower.

“The stray problem in Ipoh has reached a critical level, making it urgent to establish dedicated facilities,” she said.

“Until that happens, we encourage the community to support NGOs that are already working on the ground to help these animals.”

She added that long term solutions must address the root causes of the issue.

“Lasting solutions must include compulsory microchipping, mandatory neutering and stricter pet ownership rules,” she said. “Without responsible ownership, the cycle of abandonment and growing stray populations will continue.”

With the High Tea fundraiser approaching,  gather friends, family and colleagues for an afternoon of good company while supporting a meaningful cause.

Every seat purchased helps support the rescue and welfare of Ipoh’s stray cats and dogs.
