Zoo Taiping records new animal births

By: Zaki Salleh

TAIPING — Zoo Taiping & Night Safari (ZTNS) has continued its conservation success by recording several new wildlife births between July and December 2025.

Among the births recorded were a Bornean orangutan, three each of Wallaby and Lesser adjutant stork (Burung Botak Upeh), two Bawean deer and Chital deer, as well as a Barking deer.

In addition, 16 lesser adjutant storks were recorded hatching naturally in habitats outside the zoo’s exhibition area during the same period.

To date, the total number of the birds both in captivity and in the surrounding areas has reached 106.

The achievement reflects not only the high standards of animal care and habitat management at the zoo, but also contributes significantly to species conservation — particularly for animals classified as threatened and requiring continuous protection.

In a related development, ZTNS also successfully carried out a deer release programme aimed at strengthening the food resources of the Malayan tiger at Royal Belum State Park on Feb 11.

Two barking deer and three Wild boar were contributed for the programme.

The initiative marked the first collaboration between the zoo and the Perak State Government, Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Yayasan Sultan Idris Shah II.

It aims to strengthen the population of prey species as a natural food source for the Malayan tiger in its natural habitat.

The initiative highlights the role of ZTNS not only as a recreational and educational destination, but also as an active conservation institution supporting the protection of Malaysia’s biodiversity.
