KUALA KANGSAR, March — More than 27,000 pelita panjut (traditional oil lamps) were used in this year’s Kuala Kangsar Panjut Festival, with a range of heritage-inspired themes highlighted, including Istana Kenangan and the Big Clock Tower.

The Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPKK) said the competitive festival was organised by the state government in collaboration with the council.

In a statement, it added that visitor turnout has been consistently encouraging, with an estimated 20,000 people present to witness the beauty and creative displays of pelita panjut by participants.

“The festival, which is held as a competition, completed its pjudging session on March 15 (Sunday).

“Yesterday, an estimated 10,000 visitors, including international tourists, attended the event. Tonight, the number is expected to rise to 20,000.

“Throughout the festival, a total of 27,830 pelita panjut were used by participants to create various decorative forms and structures. Some even incorporated recycled materials such as beverage cans,” the statement said.

The strong participation of youths has also been encouraging and is vital in ensuring that this culture and tradition continues to thrive.

Pelita panjut are traditional Malay lamps made from bamboo or tins filled with kerosene and a wick, typically lit during the last 10 nights of Ramadan.

The opening ceremony and prize presentation were officiated by the state Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee.

The festival drew 21 participant entries, involving eight government agencies and NGOs, as well as 13 Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) from across Kuala Kangsar.

Participants showcased a variety of themes rooted in local identity and heritage, such as Masjid Ubudiah, Istana Kenangan, Istana Iskandariah, Labu Sayong, the Big Clock Tower and traditional Malay houses.

In line with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Perak is targeting the arrival of 10.5 million domestic tourists and 1.1 million international visitors.
