TAIPING: The Taiping Clock Tower, one of the defining icons of Taiping as a Heritage Town, has undergone refurbishment while retaining its historical character.

Built in 1881 and renovated a decade later, the structure was also known as “The Fort”. Over the years, the tower served multiple roles, including as a police station during British administration and later as a local fire station.
Today, the landmark operates as a Tourist Information Centre, managed voluntarily by the Taiping Tourism Association (TTA).
The historic tower, which has stood since 1881, has now been given a fresh lease of life with its transformation into a modern and interactive Visitor Interpretation Centre.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and Sustainable Tourism Malaysia, chaired by The Habitat Foundation and Tengah Island Conservation.
The project aims to provide visitors with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Taiping’s rich history and heritage, allowing them to experience its past firsthand.

Earlier, the official launching ceremony was officiated by Perak State Executive Councillor for Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development, Loh Sze Yee.
Also present was the Orang Besar Jajahan Larut, Matang and Selama, Orang Kaya Menteri Paduka Tuan, Datuk Seri Haji Wan Mohd Isa bin Datuk Haji Wan Mohd.
With its historical significance, natural beauty and distinctive town atmosphere, Taiping continues to strengthen its position as one of the country’s leading tourism destinations.
