TAIPING: Nurturing an interest in history from the school years.
That is the commendable initiative undertaken by the Taiping Heritage Society (THS) through the organisation of the Wira Warisan heritage education programme.
The event was held with the aim of igniting enthusiasm among youths, fostering understanding of heritage, and deepening appreciation of history.
A total of 15 selected schools advanced to the final stage, with 20 teams involving 72 students and more than 20 teachers choosing historical topics closely connected to their communities.
The initiative is seen as an important platform in cultivating awareness and bringing the younger generation closer to local history and culture.
Participants showcased creativity through performances that combined oral history, the use of local dialects, and acting.
The programme also highlighted the uniqueness of local heritage that is increasingly being forgotten amid the tide of modernisation.
In line with the concept of Wira Warisan, it has the potential to produce a new generation of custodians who will continue preserving the nation’s historical treasures.
For the lower secondary category, SMK Kampung Jambu emerged champion through its presentation titled Dalam Dakapan Hujan Larut.
Meanwhile, the upper secondary category was won by SMK King Edward VII with the title Kuala Sepetang: Heritage Eco-Tourism of the Local Community.
The second edition of the programme received praise through the collaboration between the Taiping Heritage Society and its strategic partners.
Among them were the Larut Matang dan Selama District Education Office, the LMS District Office, and Paragon Cinemas.
The programme is hoped to continue serving as a bridge to strengthen ties among communities while elevating the heritage of Perak.
