What Remains at 22 Hale Street, but Not for Long

By Anne Das

There are only a few days left to catch What Remains, the latest solo exhibition by artist Lee Kok Wan at 22 Hale Street Museum and Gallery, Ipoh.

The exhibition, which opened on 23 May, runs until 21 June 2026, making this the final week for visitors to experience Lee’s new body of work in person.

For those who remember Lee’s previous return to 22 Hale Street, this show marks another chapter in a deeply personal artistic journey. The retired chef turned artist spent three decades in Bermuda, where he developed his practice alongside a long career in the culinary world.

Now back in Ipoh, his work continues to carry the quiet intensity of someone who has lived between places, memories and identities.

Titled What Remains, the exhibition is presented in charcoal on paper and explores Lee’s reflections on his past, present and future.

The series traces a gradual movement from form to dissolution. Beginning with the image of a fragmented tree, the works move through ideas of containment before reaching a point where structure no longer holds.

Rather than presenting a subject in a straightforward way, each piece appears to record a transformation. Material, memory and gesture begin to separate. What was once recognisable is reduced to trace, tension and residue.

This exhibition asks visitors to slow down, look closely and sit with what is left behind. In charcoal, Lee finds a language that feels raw, restrained and intimate. The medium suits the subject. It allows shadow, pressure and absence to speak.

For art lovers, collectors, students and anyone curious about contemporary visual expression, What Remains is worth making time for before it closes.

About The Artist:

Lee’s artistic profile spans exhibitions and awards in Bermuda, including solo exhibitions at Masterworks Museum, Bermuda Society of Arts and The Windjammer Gallery, as well as recognition at the Bermuda Biennial and marine art prizes.

His return to Ipoh has brought that experience into a local setting, where his work can now be enjoyed by audiences here.
