IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) will not hesitate to take action, including lodging reports with the authorities, over the dissemination of false and defamatory content alleging that the iconic ‘IPOH’ sign appears alongside Chinese characters on Jalan Kuala Kangsar.
According to a statement from MBI on Wednesday, the claim went viral through a post in the Facebook group ‘Manjoi Manjoi Ajerr’ and drew strong reactions from social media users.
“MBI strongly denies the claim circulating via a post in the Facebook group ‘Manjoi Manjoi Ajerr’, alleging that Chinese characters were installed alongside the iconic ‘IPOH’ wording on the hill near Jalan Kuala Kangsar.
“MBI confirms that the uploaded and circulated image is false and is believed to have been manipulated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology or digital editing methods.
“The iconic ‘IPOH’ sign is currently undergoing inspection, repair, and refurbishment works,” the statement said.
The statement added that the lettering was taken down on July 15 to allow a comprehensive inspection of its physical structure and condition.
“This step was taken to ensure the iconic sign remains in good, safe, and preserved condition as a landmark and symbol of pride for Ipoh.
“Reinstallation of the ‘IPOH’ sign is expected to be carried out in stages from August 4 to 6, subject to weather conditions and smooth progress at the site,” it said.
Consequently, any image displaying other text installed alongside the word ‘IPOH’ at the location is false, misleading, and does not reflect the actual situation.
The dissemination of the manipulated image along with untrue statements is an irresponsible act that can cause misunderstanding, anxiety, and confusion among the public.
“The content is also viewed as defamatory and has the potential to harm Ipoh’s image, harmony, and reputation.
“MBI urges the public not to easily believe, comment on, share, or spread any unverified information.
“Members of the public are advised to verify details through official MBI channels before reacting to or sharing any content on social media,” it added.
