IPOH – The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) must conduct an immediate investigation and provide clarification following an accident at a theme park in Subang Jaya, Selangor.
The more pressing issue at present is the operational status of the roller coaster involved in the accident.
MCA Central Committee member Cally Ting said DOSH, which operates under the Ministry of Human Resources, has legal powers to take action if machinery is believed to pose a danger to public safety.
“The ride should be suspended pending a comprehensive safety inspection.
“When an accident results in injuries to several members of the public, the priority must be to ensure that the ride does not continue operating,” she said in a statement today.
The incident occurred at around 9 pm last Saturday but was only reported to the authorities at 11.45 am the following day.
In the incident, 10 of the passengers involved were injured.
Cally also called on DOSH Selangor to clarify whether a Prohibition Notice under Section 48 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 had been issued.
She also urged the department to clarify the current status of the roller coaster’s Certificate of Fitness (CF).
She said DOSH must state whether a new certificate is required before the ride is allowed to resume operations.
In addition, she called for clarification on the nature of the safety inspections that have been or will be conducted on the ride.
“The authorities must also explain who is responsible for certifying the safety of the ride before it is allowed to carry passengers again.
“DOSH has the legal authority, technical expertise and enforcement mechanisms to take action, and there should be no unnecessary delay,” she said.
