IPOH: The Perak state government is giving special attention to the healthcare needs of senior citizens on Pangkor Island by expanding health screening, physiotherapy and occupational rehabilitation services at the Pangkor Health Clinic.
Perak Health Exco Dato’ A Sivanesan said senior citizens currently comprise 1,381 of the island’s total population of approximately 9,800.
He said this in response to a supplementary question by Pangkor assemblywoman Norhaslinda Zakaria during the Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Perak State Legislative Assembly today.
He said the RM24 million Type Four Pangkor Health Clinic was completed in December 2025 and began operations on January 19 this year.
Among the services provided are health examinations and screenings for senior citizens, including assessments of physical ability or Activities of Daily Living (ADL), fall risks, mental health, dementia and depression.
“As of August, a total of 365 senior citizens had received health screening services at the clinic,” he said.
The clinic also conducts programmes to empower senior citizens in managing their health, including healthy cooking demonstrations and exercise activities.
“Physiotherapy and occupational rehabilitation services have also begun operating daily following the addition of staff.
“As of August, a total of 234 senior citizens had received physiotherapy and occupational rehabilitation services,” he said.
He added that nutrition officers also conduct visits to Pangkor Island to plan and implement nutrition programmes aimed at improving the health status of senior citizens.
For senior citizens with complications, patients will be referred to family medicine specialists at the Pangkor Health Clinic or directly to Seri Manjung Hospital if further treatment is required.
“This is to ensure that senior citizens on Pangkor Island have access to healthcare services on par with residents on the mainland,” he said.
