LUMUT – The Pangkor Island passenger jetty requires serious attention, particularly regarding safety and cleanliness.
Pangkor State Assemblywoman Norhaslinda Zakaria said concerns over the condition of the jetty resurfaced after a visitor fell on a slippery staircase this morning.
She said the incident should serve as a warning for immediate action to be taken before a more serious incident occurs.
According to her, the condition poses a risk to passengers, particularly when boarding and disembarking from ferries.
“Imagine if the visitor had been injured and had to be rushed to hospital,” she said.
Norhaslinda said the situation could also affect the image of Lumut and Manjung as tourism and maritime destinations.
She said she had previously raised concerns over the condition of the stairs and cleanliness of the jetty with the relevant authorities.
The issue had also attracted the attention of local media following complaints from ferry operators and members of the public.
“Let us not wait until an accident happens before taking action, as safety and the image of our tourism industry must be given priority,” she said.
She hoped immediate action would be taken to ensure the jetty remains safe, clean and comfortable for visitors.
