KAMPAR – Perak police have successfully dismantled a scam call centre syndicate that impersonated Japanese police officers in Kampar.
Perak Police Chief Dato’ Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the breakthrough followed three raids at Timur Perdana Condominium, Kampar, on September 24.
The first raid led to the arrest of four Japanese nationals, comprising two men and two women.
In the second raid, police arrested five Japanese men believed to be linked to the syndicate.
The third raid resulted in the arrest of four Chinese men who were also suspected of being involved in the same scam.
Investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating since August, targeting victims in Japan.
Some of the suspects were believed to have previously worked in Cambodia before entering Malaysia and receiving commissions based on the proceeds of their scams.
Police also seized 18 mobile phones, two laptops, two iPads, Japanese police badges, uniforms and a set of scam scripts in Japanese.
The total value of the seized items was estimated at RM20,000, while the case is being investigated under Sections 120B and 420 of the Penal Code.
All 13 suspects were remanded from September 25 to 28 to assist in the investigation.
