IPOH – Just as Harry Potter is a fantasy phenomenon in the West, Malay literary works are equally remarkable in their own right.
For instance, Siri Bercakap Dengan Jin by Tamar Jalis is a highly popular literary work comprising novels and a series of horror, mystical, and autobiographical memoir-style adventure stories.

In recognition of its enduring appeal, the Tamar Jalis & Siri Bercakap Dengan Jin Visual Literature Retrospective Programme, held recently, brought together literature enthusiasts and artists to revisit the legacy of a Malay horror series that once captivated readers across the country.
The event, held at Moody Cafe here, was part of the NARATIF: Literature, Visual Arts and Performing Arts programme.

Also in attendance was the late Tamar Jalis’s son-in-law, Syamreen Shafei, who shared stories behind the writing of Siri Bercakap Dengan Jin.
His sharing session also shed light on the history and experiences associated with the work, revealing aspects that may not be widely known to the public.
The programme also featured a discussion session with Dr Zabidin Hj. Ismail entitled Appreciating Siri Bercakap Dengan Jin: Between Literature, Mysticism and Culture.
In addition, Ustaz Syed Shahriman Jamalullayl shared his experiences in a session entitled From Bookshelves to Memories: Stories from Readers to Book Collectors.

Siri Bercakap Dengan Jin is more than just a horror and mystical literary series.
It also documents cultural elements, customs, traditional practices, beliefs and advice rooted in Malay society.
Its legacy deserves continued appreciation as part of Malaysia’s Malay literary heritage, reflecting the imagination and way of life of the community during its time.
Visitors also had the opportunity to explore a visual exhibition and book collection, as well as attend discussions on Malay horror novels, mystical culture and behind-the-scenes experiences of the Bercakap Dengan Jin drama adaptation.
