KAMPAR – The unique culinary heritage of the Rao community was showcased through the Bertanak Menggulai Programme – a demonstration and documentation initiative highlighting the traditional cuisine of the Malay Rao community in Malaysia, held in Temoh near here.
The programme was organised by the Malaysian Rao Network Association (JARO), in collaboration with the Perak Writers Association, with support from strategic partners.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Orang Besar Jajahan of Batang Padang, Toh Paduka Indera Dato’ Haji Mat Rasid Ayob.
Among the traditional dishes featured were Lopek Gobu, Kelamai, Asom Koli, Kuih Serabai Rao, as well as Pulut Konten served with Koli.

Held in a relaxed atmosphere inspired by a traditional village feast, the programme also fostered a spirit of togetherness and community cooperation.
The initiative served as a platform to introduce the distinctive culinary arts of the Rao community to a wider audience.

In addition to cooking demonstrations, documentation efforts were undertaken to record recipes, preparation methods and traditional knowledge passed down through generations.
This initiative is important in ensuring that the Rao community’s traditional culinary heritage is preserved and does not fade into obscurity.

The programme also drew attention to the efforts of Dr Zabidin Ismail in promoting the culinary heritage of the Malay Rao community in Malaysia.
Food heritage is more than just what is served at the table; it reflects the identity, history and culture of a community and must be preserved for future generations.
