PANGKOR – Pangkor Town was brought to a standstill after heavy rain lasting two hours from 4 a.m. triggered flooding in several areas.

Residential areas and villages across Pangkor Island were also affected.

Among the affected areas were Kg. Sungai Pinang Besar, Kg. Masjid, Kg. Teluk Kecil, Kg. Hussin, Teluk Gedung, Kg. Tengah, Rumah Murah, Taman Pangkor Mutiara and Taman Sri Pangkor.

According to information from the Perak State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, the heavy rain stopped at around 9 a.m. today.

However, no temporary evacuation centre (PPS) was opened, and weather conditions were gradually improving, with skies becoming clearer.

Water levels are also showing a downward trend as this was not caused by a high tide. Monitoring at the affected locations is still ongoing,” the secretariat said here today.

Meanwhile, the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) has assisted in carrying out clean-up operations following the heavy rainfall.

Water levels have begun to recede in several affected areas, with clean-up operations and monitoring being carried out in stages, depending on conditions at each location.

Initial monitoring found that some areas had been affected by muddy water and debris carried by the floodwaters.

In response, preliminary clean-up operations were promptly initiated to ensure that the affected areas could be restored to a cleaner, safer and more orderly condition.

MPM has also made logistical preparations and coordinated personnel to assist with clean-up operations and follow-up measures in the affected areas in the coming days.

Earlier, Higher Education Minister Senator Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir was also present during the on-site monitoring and response operations.

Also present were Perak Menteri Besar’s Special Officer for the Pangkor state constituency, Datuk Haji Mohd Rafiq Mohd, along with officers from government agencies and local community leaders.
