Kuala Lumpur: The Ipoh City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, MBI) has successfully secured a funding grant of RM1.7 million from the Ministry of Digital to implement a smart city project based on 5G technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI).


In a statement, MBI said the initiative aims to enhance the well-being of city residents and strengthen the Ipoh Smart City agenda.
“This high-impact project will be carried out in collaboration with Digital Perak as a strategic partner.
“To ensure the full optimization of 5G and AI technologies,” said the statement.
It added that the project also supports the aspiration to position Ipoh as a model smart city in Malaysia.




The grant was presented to Ipoh Mayor, Zamakhshari Hanipah, during the 5G Enterprise & AI Cities Grant 2025 Award Ceremony, held in conjunction with the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).
Also in attendance were Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo; President & CEO of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh, David Hägerbro; and CEO of Digital Nasional Berhad, Datuk Azman Ismail.
The prestigious event was held to celebrate Malaysia’s progress in driving technological innovation in 5G and AI across various industry sectors.
