TAIPING: What’s it like to spend a night at a museum?
It may sound spooky, but in reality, it offers a unique experience in exploring historical stories—especially those of national heroes.
That was the extraordinary and lively experience of 60 students and teachers from SMK Kamunting and SMK Convent Taiping who took part in the ‘A Night at the Matang Museum’ program.
This inaugural two-day, one-night program not only gave participants the rare chance to stay overnight at a historical site, but also offered a variety of engaging and interactive activities. These included a mini heritage object showcase, traditional games, a nationhood talk, and even a history-themed TikTok segment.
Adding to the excitement were activities like the Merdeka Just Fun Walk and the Young Curator Mission.
The Merdeka Just Fun Walk gave participants a relaxed heritage trail tour around the Matang Museum area, including sites like Sungai Melawati and the Old Penghulu Hall.
According to Matang Museum Head, Noraini Hassan, the program aimed to cultivate an interest in national history and heritage among the younger generation.
She said it also served to strengthen patriotic spirit among students through a fun and relaxed approach.
“The participants showed incredible enthusiasm throughout the program, actively taking part in every activity,” she said.
“The Young Curator Mission especially gave students a hands-on opportunity to understand the role and responsibilities of a museum curator, while also raising awareness about the importance of preserving historical artifacts.”
The management of Matang Museum extended their heartfelt appreciation to the students, accompanying teachers, and all staff involved in making the program a success.
The collaboration and spirit of all parties turned the event into a cherished memory that participants will not soon forget.
This unique experience is hoped to continue nurturing a love for history, heritage, and the nation among the younger generation.
