Community Spaces Boost Neighbourhood Spirit and Resident Interaction

By Zaki Salleh

IPOH: Community well-being does not only depend on a conducive residential area but also on social spaces where residents can interact.

This aspect is emphasized by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) through the Community Space (RUKOM) concept.

RUKOM serves as a shared social space that fosters intergenerational integration, encourages resident interaction, and strengthens the spirit of a clean, safe, and prosperous neighbourhood, particularly for the B40 group.

This initiative also supports the Malaysia MADANI aspirations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11) by providing inclusive and sustainable social spaces.

Consequently, KPKT continues to achieve success with the launch of the 100th Community Space (RUKOM) at PPR Seri Kepayang, Ipoh, implemented by URBANICE Malaysia since the initiative began in 2023.

This success is not just about providing physical spaces but represents a major effort to strengthen community well-being and create a more harmonious and inclusive living environment.

The launch of the 100th RUKOM marks the beginning of a new phase for KPKT in strengthening urban community social networks.

Efforts will continue to expand so that every public housing community has a shared space that unites residents, encourages innovation, and fosters unity.

Earlier, the launch ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming.

During the launch, he also spent time interacting with PPR children playing congkak, demonstrating his friendliness and closeness with all layers of society, in line with the community spirit that RUKOM aims to build.

Since the first RUKOM was built on 6 July 2023 at PPR Seri Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, KPKT remains committed to expanding access to citizen-friendly community spaces, despite facing physical space constraints in some locations.

Innovative approaches, consultation with residents, approval from local authorities, and structured budget planning have been key drivers of this success.
