Ipoh plans homeless transit centre to safeguard welfare

By: Aida Aziz

IPOH – Plans are underway to establish a dedicated homeless transit centre in Ipoh as part of efforts to ensure the welfare of the homeless community is properly taken care of.

State Executive Councillor for Women Development, Family, Social Welfare, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, said the initiative also focuses on strengthening food distribution for the homeless around the city.

“Following a meeting at the Ipoh City Council (MBI) today, my main focus is to improve food distribution for the homeless community in Ipoh.

“We are working towards setting up a dedicated facility, namely a Homeless Transit Centre, which will function as a ‘one-stop centre’ or ‘pit stop’ for them.

“Collaboration between the state government, MBI, the Social Welfare Department (JKM), the National Welfare Foundation (YKN) and other relevant agencies is crucial to ensure this group is not neglected and receives more structured assistance,” she said on Tuesday.

She also expressed hope that the initiative can be successfully implemented in the interest of the welfare of those concerned.
