Growing vegetables such as Water spinach, Spinach and Mustard greens can be a practical option for home gardeners, as these crops can be harvested in less than a month even when planted in small spaces such as apartment balconies.

According to the Department of Agriculture Malaysia, a mini garden at home can produce fresh vegetables for daily family consumption.
Water spinach, commonly known locally as kangkung, can be harvested within about 20 to 25 days after planting.
It is very easy to cultivate, whether using pots, polybags or hydroponic systems, and can be harvested several times if properly maintained.
Spinach is also a popular choice as it can typically be harvested within 25 to 30 days.
The plant grows well in small pots and can be harvested using the cut-and-regrow method, allowing the leaves to continue growing after being trimmed.
Mustard greens are usually ready for harvest within 30 to 35 days and can be grown in polybags or hydroponic systems with adequate sunlight.
Other plants suitable for small home gardens include Lettuce and Spring onion, which can generally be harvested within about 30 to 40 days.
These crops require minimal root space, are easy to maintain and are well suited for small-scale urban farming.
With proper care, such as ensuring adequate sunlight, using suitable planting media and maintaining consistent watering, a small balcony garden can continuously produce fresh vegetables for household use.
