KAMUNTING: A drain overrun with dense undergrowth and tall trees at the traffic light junction along Jalan Kamunting in Taman Glenview here is feared to pose a risk of causing flash floods during heavy rain.
A complainant, known as Daniel, claimed that the drain has not been cleaned for a long time by the responsible authorities, namely the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) or its appointed contractors.
“Are there no contractors left to cut the grass? Just take a look, even a 10-foot-deep drain can grow trees that tall.
“This drain is filled with trees and grass. It hasn’t been maintained for quite some time. One day, it could become clogged and lead to flooding,” he said.
Meanwhile, many have urged the authorities to immediately clear the area as well as other locations around Taiping facing similar conditions.
“It’s an eyesore to see such overgrowth in the drains,” said a resident.
“You could even turn this into a mini zoo to keep crocodiles. Are the authorities still on festive leave?” another resident remarked sarcastically.
It is hoped that MPT will carry out monitoring at the locations mentioned, as leaving the situation unattended could lead to flash floods and other issues in the future.
