Looking Out for the Safety and Wellness of Our Elders

By KT Leong

In a follow-up to Ipoh Echo’s previous coverage of ConnecticaZen’s efforts to create awareness and promote safety and wellness among the elderly population, we caught up with the team behind ConnecticaZen to ask about their ResQLiv24 service.

ResQLiv24 is a subscription service which provides the elder population with access to the ResQfone, a device that the senior can wear, that can allow them to call for help at the press of a button, communicate with their contact list without the need to fiddle with a phone and also has fall detection as well as other features.

Since our last check-up, they have added around 56 new subscribers to their service. They have also answered to 16 cases in that short amount of time, with 3 of those cases needing ambulance services, which ConnecticaZEN has partnered with MK Ambulance to provide. Fortunately, only one of those ambulance cases was an emergency, whereby the senior was experiencing heart rate issues, which saw the senior transported to Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) by MK Ambulance.

In another case, the senior’s children were abroad at the time of calling for help, but as the ResQfone uses 4G, they were able to contact their children, who had enabled free roaming.

“As we go forward with our service, we’re always improving on it.”, said Calvin Chai, director of ConnecticaZen. “For instance, the first fall is the most critical. Those who fall for the first time, are more likely to fall again. So we’re currently working on our SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) and in future, we may advise our subscribers to follow-up any falls with physio to strengthen their limbs. They can go to places like Yayasan Ipoh for the physio, as they charge an affordable rate.”

“We are very concerned about the safety of our elders. They took care of us when we were young, so it’s our duty to take care of them now that they’re old. And we’re not the only ones who believe in this. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, we are currently able to hold the Protect 100 campaign, where the first 100 eligible elderly will be able to receive a 50% subsidy to our subscription service for 2 years.”

“We are also always looking to hold workshops to create awareness among our elderly population. Such as for dementia, diet and of course, safety. In fact, we are holding free workshops in the coming weeks.”
