IPOH: Domestic violence should no longer be viewed as a private family matter but as a social issue that requires collective action from the community, said a speaker at the PRISMANITA Open Day and Advocacy for Women’s Well-Being @ Domestic Violence (AKU WANITA@KRT) programme in Perak.

She said domestic violence was not confined to physical abuse but also included emotional, psychological, sexual and economic abuse, all of which could have serious impacts on victims and affect the harmony of the family institution.
“Every form of abuse can leave a deep impact on victims and disrupt the well-being of families.
“Therefore, efforts to increase public awareness on domestic violence must continue to be strengthened,” she said during the programme’s opening ceremony.
She added that support systems for victims must also be improved to ensure they receive the necessary protection, assistance and counselling.

She expressed hope that advocacy programmes such as AKU WANITA@KRT would encourage more women to come forward and seek help instead of suffering in silence.
The public, she said, should also play a more active role by remaining vigilant and reporting any signs of domestic violence.
“With the commitment and cooperation of all parties, a safer environment free from violence can be created.
“Everyone must work together to build a more caring, harmonious and supportive society,” she added.
