House for Former Soldier

After a six-year wait, former soldier, Zakaria Mohd Piah, 52, finally got his dream house. Zakaria was formerly attached to Regiment 304 (TA) stationed in Gerik. The house was built on his own land with funds sourced from the Veteran Department of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).

To the ex-soldier, it was a form of recognition for the sacrifices he had made while serving in the territorial regiment along the East-West Highway for over a decade in the 1980s.

He was beaming with pride when he received a replica of the house key from Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Wira Mohd Johari Baharum. The house was built by personnel from the Taiping-based Royal Engineer Squadron. The handing-over ceremony was held at the Kampung Gerik, Gerik on Friday, November 13.

Present at the morning ceremony were Brigadier-General Mas’od bin Hj Muhammad, Commander 2nd Malaysian Infantry Brigade, Senator Admiral (Retired) Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor, President of MAF Veterans’ Association, Major General Datuk Wira Mohd Noor Daud, Director General MAF Veterans Affairs Department and Datuk Mohd Tarmizi Idris, Adun for Kenering.
