Chemical Leakage at Expressway

A chemical leakage was reported at KM 353 of the North South Expressway heading north today on July 13, which involved a lorry tank transporting washing machine liquids.

According to a correspondent of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, they received information regarding the leakage around 10am.

The cleaning operation was headed by Bidor Fire and Rescue Station with assistance from the Hazardous Materials Unit Team (HAZMAT) of Pasir Puteh Fire and Rescue Station.

“When the rescue team arrived at the location, leakage was found at the tank section of the lorry,” he said. “Luckily, no victims were involved in the incident.

“The lorry was situated at the side of the road,” the correspondent added. “Only a small quantity of the chemical was leaked but vapours were emitted.”

Part of the chemicals were transferred to another lorry tank by the company.

As a control measure, the firefighting squad sprayed foam to neutralise the leaked acidic chemicals while the HAZMAT team scattered soda powder around the leakage.

The operation manned by Assistant Fire Superintendent Muhammad Ashraf Mat Isa was brought to an end by 2.19pm.
