A Taste of Traditional Cuisine with Kampung Flavours

By Mei Kuan

Running on the theme of traditional dishes in Perak, the Tower Regency Hotel Ipoh along Jalan Dato’ Seri Ahmad Said has just unveiled its dinner buffet brimming with kampung flavours for the month of Ramadan.

Beginning April 16 till May 12, the highlights of its rotating menu include rendang tok (braised beef short ribs), pajeri terung (brinjal curry), udang masak lemak cili api (prawns cooked with coconut and bird’s eye chilli), ikan tempoyak (fish cooked with fermented durian), sotong sambal petai (spicy chili gravy with squids and bitter beans), sup ekor lembu dengan daging (oxtail soup with meat), ayam masak merah (chicken in spicy tomato sauce), kerang rebus dengan cili kicap (boiled cockles with chilli and soy sauce), bubur lambuk (spiced congee) and ulam (fresh herb salad).

Featuring almost 100 items daily, one of the must-trys is the kerabu cendawan sisir (spicy salad with split gill mushrooms).

“Cendawan sisir is an ingredient that’s very difficult to find. We can only obtain it from the rubber trees from Kuala Kangsar,” explained Malizan Zakaria, the general manager cum hotel consultant during a session with the press yesterday evening (April 16).

“Meanwhile, rendang tok takes up to 4 hours of preparation time,” added Executive Chef Mohd Kamarulzaman, fondly known as Chef Ayob.

There are also stalls with ikan bakar (grilled fish), kambing panggang (roasted lamb), fried noodles, fritters, laksa (spicy noodle soup) with condiments and more. Among the desserts offered are ais kacang (shaved ice with various toppings), fruit jellies, cakes, puddings, rojak buah (spicy fruit salad), sliced fruits and kuih (traditional cakes).

Operating with strict adherence to the health and safety standard operating procedures, disposable hand gloves are provided for diners.

The normal rate of the spread is priced at RM55 per adult and RM40 per child or senior citizen. Do take note that there are special reduced rates for groups of 5 to 9, 10 to 14, 15 to 19, 20 to 24 and 25 diners.

The seating capacity of the dining space on the sixth floor is 200 people. Prayer facilities are available.
