Some Mi Sedaap Products Found To Contain Ethylene Oxide

The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) gave a press conference to announce the residue of ethylene oxide that was traced in  a few flavours of Mi Sedaap, a product of Indonesia.

Health Director – General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the two products were Mi Sedap Korean Spicy Chicken Instant Noodle with the expiry date of 21 May 2023 and Mi Sedaap Korean Spicy Soup Instant Noodles with the expiry date of 17 March 2023.

Ethylene Oxide is a carcinogenic chemical gas compound that is often used in pesticide fumigation. It is also used as an active ingredient in cleaning agents that are not allowed to be used on surfaces of items used to store food. It is not allowed in food products according to Malaysian Food Regulations

“Through the Ministry of Health’s review of the Food Safety Information System of Malaysia (FoSIM) data, Mi Sedaap Korean Spicy Soup Instant Noodles has been imported into the country. However, no entry of this product has been recorded with the mentioned expiry dates”, he said regarding the issue of Mi Sedaap’s product recall through a media statement yesterday.

“He added that the Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the market and impose the Restrict, Test and Release or Tahan, Uji dan Lepas (TUL)  at all entry points of the country. The Ministry of Health is diligent and concerned about things that threaten the health of consumers.
