Where is the sense of the litterer?

by Rosli

Despite numerous efforts made by the Ipoh City Council (MBI) to overcome the garbage issue, an attitude of taking things for granted persists among some residents.

Due to this, people accuse the MBI of not doing their jobs and just “eating blind wages”.

This is what happens when garbage is piled up by the drain in front of the parking area near the Taman Pengkalan Jaya Public Market site.

It not only spoils the view, but also makes the area look dirty in addition to causing discomfort to the residents of Taman Pengkalan Jaya and market visitors.

Most of these wastes are disposed of by outside parties including business groups and judging by the type of waste, such as fruit waste, food  and building materials, they are put there by  illegal dumpers.

These same dumpers should be careful because the location has been equipped with a closed circuit camera (CCTV) to record felonies.

This parking area used to have large garbage cans and the environment was bad in addition to being a breeding ground for vermin.

However, this location was paved and repaired and then turned into a parking lot, thus removing the previous dirty image.

The position of the garbage cans was changed to be placed on the side of the market for public use where the garbage is collected every morning by MBI officers.

A market trader who wanted to be known as Kim said that MBI’s efforts to change the area were praised because there were no more heaps of rubbish that sometimes piled up.

“MBI spends a lot of money to make the area beautiful and clean but there are still people who don’t use their brains and dispose of garbage as they please.

“They take the easy way out and put garbage on the side of the road,” he said.

The same complaint was voiced by resident, Mohd Amin Mohd Saufi who wants those who throw garbage to be punished.

“This area used to be really dirty with garbage, but when MBI upgraded it into a parking lot, it was a good effort.

“That’s why I get angry when garbage is piled up here again. We get angry when people say that the image of Ipoh is dirty with garbage when the cause is the attitude of a few of us,” he explained.
