By Zaki Salleh

Ipoh is now the 5th city in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, and Johor Bahru and also the first in the Northern Region to have 5G access at a speed of 1GB per second.

The mayor of Ipoh, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin @ Md Daud said, it was a collaboration of the Greater Ipoh 5G team led together by Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP), Digital Nasional Berhad, SKMM Perak and Telekom Malaysia (TM).

Until now the Ipoh City Council (MBI) has implemented the kick-off of 14 projects including the main project of the Ipoh Smart City which is the Ipoh Integrated Command Centre (IIOC).

Chairman of the Housing and Local Government Committee, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said, IIOC is the heart of Ipoh’s development towards becoming a smart city.

According to her, with such a sophisticated control centre, it will realise Ipoh City’s dream of achieving Smart Green City status by 2030.

“Although this IIOC Project is placed on the status of a Long Term project, with the dedication and cooperation led by the Mayor, it has been successfully implemented in a short time.

“This IIOC project is the heart of the Ipoh Smart City Action Plan which will be a smart control centre that can process Big Data using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) software,” she said.

She added this at a press conference after visiting the Ipoh Integrated Operations Centre (IIOC) and being given a 5G Briefing at the same location at UTC Perak this morning.

Also present was the Chairman of the State Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee, Mohd Azlan Helmi.

Elaborating on Sandrea’s explanation, this smart control centre smoothens MBI’s urban administration to administration that is intensive in High-Tech, sensors and devices.

He said, in addition to that, TM as a strategic partner has helped MBI in adapting various Smart Solutions with precise cooperation.

Meanwhile, Rumaizi promised, now, the rollout of the 5G network in the MBI Administrative Area has reached 42 percent work progress.

According to him, out of 208 designated areas, 86 locations have been in the network.

“It includes the Downtown Area, Klebang, Bercham, Tambun, Canning Garden, Ipoh Garden, Meru, Ampang, Gunung Rapat and Pasir Puteh.

“This momentum will continue and until now, as many as 208 5G network sites will be broadcast around the Kinta district,” he said.
