Special Programme for World Cancer Day 2023

This morning’s Programme held by Family Wellness Club (FWC) in collaboration with the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) was well attended by people from all walks of life.

The first Speaker Dr. Teoh Soong Kee, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, and also a cancer survivor, shared his journey from the time his cancer in the stomach (lymphoma) was detected and the treatments he underwent, the support he received from family and friends and his own spirituality, all of which helped him to stay positive while undergoing chemotherapy.

He shared with the participants what it was like when he had the cancer through some poems from his book “Cell Wars”.

Dr.Teoh Soong Kee brought along some copies of “Cell Wars” and a few other books he had written and donated the sales of the books to participants to the National Cancer Society Malaysia.

The second Speaker Dr.Vignesvari Subramaniam (Dr. Vicky) an Associate with the Outreach Department of NCSM focused her Talk on “Educating and Empowering People on Cancer “.

She started off by getting the participants to do a personalised cancer risk assessment using their handphones to scan a QR Code questionnaire.

Participants who were not tech savvy were helped by NCSM’s Programme Coordinator Encik Mohammad Luqman.

Dr. Vicky then told them what their scores on the questionnaire indicate about their cancer risk.

She said while we can’t do much about the non-modifiable risk factors, like our genes, however we can reduce our modifiable risk factors such as changing to a healthy diet with more vegetables and fruits, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly.

She advised participants to go for regular screenings as early detection of cancers can save treatment costs and very importantly, can save lives too.

Participants had a lot of questions for both Speakers to clear myths about cancer.

They also thanked our Family Wellness Club for this very beneficial programme.

A sum of RM700.00 from the participants registration fees plus a contribution from Family Wellness Club was handed over to NCSM’s Programme Coordinator Encik Mohammad Luqman as a donation to the Children’s Home of Hope run by NCSM.

Thank you to our Speakers, the staff of NCSM, our organising team members from Family Wellness Club for all your valuable help and support to the success of this Programme.
