Visit Wing Zone During the Holidays

By KT Leong

It’s been awhile since I last went to Wing Zone with my colleagues. I wanted to avoid the crowd during Ramadhan. But I had a great experience last time and now I finally have an excuse to visit the Greentown branch again.

I was treated to a viewing of the excellent Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by a friend the other day, and I thought I’d return the favour with a lunch. I’ve mentioned in my previous review  that the value at Wing Zone is actually really good.

Wing Zone is a “cook-to-order” establishment, meaning it’s NOT a fast food joint, as they will freshly rub the marinade into the meat, after you make your order. The ingredients are also fresh and mostly imported. They are halal-certified.

But honestly, for me personally, that’s all a bit secondary. In this economy, how I judge is by the taste and the value compared to other places.

Take for instance, the humble but delicious Beef Tortilla with Liquid Gold. I ordered it with Smoking Q sauce last time and loved it so much that I simply had to order it again this time.

Beef Tortilla with Liquid Gold

Anyway, look at the absolute volume of beef stuffed into that perfectly textured wrapping. This one tortilla is stuffed with more meat than two whopping big burgers. I actually got another tortilla on takeaway and out of curiosity, gave it a weigh-in on my kitchen scale. It weighed approximately 350 grams, or 3 quarters of a pound.

On top of that, it comes with a drink and a side of incredible chips. Like, seriously, the chips are not something you can get outside of an establishment like Wing Zone. No takeaway comes close to the delectable crispiness of the freshly made chips here.

I know I’ve spent a lot of time on a simple tortilla, but what can I say? I like what I like and with this economy (and my salary), I’m very calculative when it comes to the value of the food I order.

Of course, you can’t come to a place called Wing Zone without trying out the wings. Since my guests couldn’t handle spicy food, we chose the less spicy flavours this go around.

Buffalo Bliss – I was looking forward to this one. We stuck to less exotic flavours on my last visit, as my colleagues back then were less adventurous and our server told us that the Buffalo Bliss was less conventional for a Malaysian palate. Personally, I enjoyed the tangy, almost sour taste of this flavour. Although kids might not like it, but it has a nice tangy kick if you’re an adult.

Garlic Parm (Parmeson)- Somewhat similar to the Buffalo Bliss, but lacking the tanginess, so you’re better able to taste the sourness of the parm. Not garlicky at all. Again, I personally like it because I like these kinds of flavours, but kids might not enjoy the kick.

As usual, the wings are tender, though not as crispy this time around as the flavours we ordered involved “wet” sauces. My guests and I enjoyed them but if you’re bringing children, you should probably choose different flavours, like the crispy Ranch or sweet Honey Q.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to talk about the Mozzarella Sticks. Oh, my god. The next time you feel like having a Mozzy Stick, do yourself a favour and order it from a Wing Zone outlet. Ideally, you should dine-in for maximum freshness. The price per stick is about the same as other franchise establishments but the quality is worlds apart. It’s soft, it’s crispy and it doesn’t stretch as much as other Mozzies. Which you would think is a bad thing but actually, what you want from Mozzarella is for it to stretch, but only up to a point. Because if it doesn’t break off at some point, it becomes a hassle to break it off yourself. The Wing Zone version has a great delicate texture, and the cheese breaks off nicely.

The Mozzarella Sticks also come with a wonderful tomato salsa to dip your stick in. The sticks are already full of umami, enhanced by the delicate crispiness of their shell, but the fresh tomato salsa just ups the savoury flavour of the Mozzarella Sticks.

I love cheese. And I was all excited for mozzarella sticks when they entered the market. But I found most to be rather bland and the stretchiness gimmick never enhanced the experience for me. But the Mozzy sticks at Wing Zone are totally top notch.

Seriously, if you’re into mozzy sticks, you just have to try theirs.

You would expect a place like Wing Zone to have good food but maybe be on the pricier side. However, their value for money is actually pretty good when you factor in the quantity of what you’re getting for the price, not to mention that the quality is way better than what you would expect from a franchise. And despite their well-trained (ie polite and patient) staff, there’s no SST cost. Suitable for groups, whether they’re all adults or mixed with children; as well as savvy eaters looking for a great deal.
