GERIK: 4 hectares of Gunung Kenderong forest near here burned down yesterday.

Assistant Director of the Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Perak, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said his side received a call regarding the incident

“The fire involved Gunung Kenderong and it is estimated to be 10 acres (four hectares).

“It is estimated that the position is 500 to 600 meters above sea level and the fire area is not on the climbing route,” he told reporters on Saturday.

He also said that the cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained and is under investigation.

He added, based on information from mountain rangers and the Forest Department, it is expected to take two to three hours to reach the fire hotspot on foot.

He explained further that monitoring operations are being carried out from time to time.

The operation was led by Gerik BBP Station Chief, Azizan Aziz.
