Ammonia Gas Leak at Ice Manufacturing Plant in Simpang Pulai

SIMPANG PULAI: An ammonia gas leak occurred at an ice manufacturing plant on Industrial Avenue Rapat early this morning.

Assistant Director of Operations, Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, reported that the incident happened at 5:11 AM today.

He stated that personnel from the Simpang Pulai Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the Pasir Putih Fire and Rescue Station, rushed to the scene.

“Upon arrival at the location, the operation chief conducted a size-up and gathered information from the factory supervisor.

“It was found that a pipe carrying ammonia gas was leaking, and the gas odour could be detected from a distance of 100 to 300 feet,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

He explained that the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Team then conducted a size-up and sent a diver into the hot zone.

“This is to seal the leak at the tank’s valve area; the Hazmat team will take further readings in the hot zone and identify any remaining leaks in the tank,” he added.

The operation was led by Senior Fire Officer II, Johari Muhammad, and Hazmat Supervisor, Senior Fire Officer II, Shaharizala Abu Hanifah.
