PANGKOR: In line with the school holiday season, the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) is organizing the Pre-Launch event for the Pangkor Gallery and the Festival Elevating the History of the Madani Nation.
The program that invites the public starts today and continues until Thursday at Pangkor Gallery, Pangkor Island.
Highlights of the festival include demonstrations of miniature shipbuilding and processing of pufferfish crafts, net sewing demonstrations, and exhibitions of historical materials.
Director of the Pangkor Island Duty-Free Management Unit, Nadiah Mohd Saruan stated that this aligns with Pangkor Island’s image as a renowned fishing hub, fisheries industry, and shipbuilding.
She mentioned that fishing activities on Pangkor Island have a history of over 100 years, notably in anchovy production and other marine products.
“Also featured are higher education exhibitions, poetry recitations, and historical forums.
“Pangkor Gallery is located not far from the main jetty of Pangkor, and visitors can easily walk there from the jetty,” she said.
The gallery, facing the beautiful panorama of Pangkor Island, originally was the building of Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Pangkor constructed in 1901.
The idea for establishing the Pangkor Gallery originated from the inspiration of Datuk Seri Zambry, the Chief Minister of Perak, in 2010.
Now, the gallery has been upgraded to showcase the uniqueness of Pangkor Island’s history and heritage.
On January 20, a program was held commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Pangkor Treaty of 1874, believed to have been signed aboard the HMS Pluto, which docked in front of this gallery.
The gallery is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and admission is free.
