TAPAH: Three districts in this state, Kinta, Manjung, and Taiping, recorded the highest accident statistics.

Chairman of the Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee, Datuk Seri Ir. Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin, stated that based on statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), from January to October 2023, a total of 495,829 road accidents were recorded with 5,049 fatalities.

“The accident statistics for Perak recorded a total of 3,551 cases of accidents, including 52 fatal accidents and 58 deaths.

“Of these figures, Kinta (Ipoh) recorded the highest number of accidents, totaling 1,330 cases with eight fatalities.

“Following Kinta, Taiping reported 344 cases with eight fatalities, and Manjung recorded 277 cases with 4 fatalities,” he said when met with media after launching the State-Level Road Safety Campaign for Perak in 2024 in conjunction with the celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the Petronas Tapah here recently.

Mohamad Nizar said that there are several factors that contribute to these accidents including the hurried attitude of road users who want to quickly return to their families, poorly maintained vehicles, and imperfect road conditions.

Apart from advocacy programs, enforcement operations throughout the festive season will continue to ensure that users always adhere to traffic regulations.

“The enforcement activities will be carried out through undercover methods as express bus passengers, implementing the Perception of Being Caught (POBC) through patrols on the main Federal Route and the Special Motorcycle Ops which will be conducted in coordination with relevant agencies,” he said.

In the meantime, the Perak State Road Safety Council (MKJR) organized the Happy Hour Free Fuel, Free Road Fatality@Petronas Tapah program, involving the activity of providing free RON 95 fuel amounting to RM30 to 300 cars and RM5 to 500 motorcycles.
