Elderly pedestrian killed by a reversing truck

SIMPANG PULAI: An elderly man died after being hit by a reversing truck in a factory area on Jalan Lahat – Simpang Pulai yesterday afternoon.

Ipoh District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, said the incident at around 1:30 PM resulted in the 66-year-old pedestrian’s death at the scene.

“Preliminary investigation found that the road accident occurred when the truck driver, a 44-year-old local man, reversed the truck without knowing that the victim was standing behind it.

“As a result, the victim was confirmed dead at the scene due to severe injuries to the chest and abdomen,” he said in a statement here on Wednesday.

Abang Zainal said the lorry driver did not suffer any injuries.

He said the victim was sent to the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) for post-mortem.

He added that a check of the lorry driver’s records revealed 100 traffic summonses, including three road accident offenses.

“While the lorry’s records showed a total of ten summonses accumulated.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (causing death by reckless or dangerous driving),” he said.

He urged witnesses to the accident to contact the case investigating officer, Inspector Muhammad Syafiq Fauze, at 013-6713177 or to report to the nearest police station to assist in the investigation.
