IPOH: The first beverage carton separation and recycling project in Malaysia, designed specifically for food and beverage (F&B) operators in shopping malls, has been launched in Ipoh.
The project, titled “Sort & Drop – Recycle the Beverage Carton”, at AEON Mall Station 18, was developed by Tetra Pak in collaboration with collection partner KPT Recycle.
It is also supported by the Urban Sustainability Division of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, AEON Mall Ipoh Station 18, and the Ipoh City Council (MBI).
The initiative introduces an Internet of Things (IoT) digital collection mechanism, featuring a Digital UBC (Used Beverage Carton) Collection Kiosk connected to the RE Connect app by KPT Recycle.
Through this system, 32 F&B outlets in the mall will have access to a user-friendly smart application to recycle their used beverage cartons.
The smart system also allows for real-time tracking and monitoring of collection data for record-keeping purposes.
The launch ceremony was officiated by Ipoh City Council Secretary, Ahmad Munir Ishak.
In his speech, he said this project contributes to the country’s circular economy agenda as outlined in the Circular Economy Roadmap for Solid Waste in Malaysia (2025–2030).
He added that following the pilot project at AEON Mall Station 18, the next phase will involve expanding participation to other shopping malls in Ipoh.
“Collaborations like this are vital in recognizing our joint efforts toward environmental sustainability,” he stated.
