RM3.5m allocation to resolve Medan Klebang Prima residents’ sewage woes

By Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

IPOH — Long-standing sewage system issues affecting residents of Medan Klebang Prima in Chemor are set to be resolved following the approval of a RM3.5 million allocation by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia (MOF) for upgrading works on the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and sewerage pipelines in the area.

The problem was caused by land subsidence at several locations, which affected the alignment of sewage pipes and resulted in the system failing to function properly, thereby impacting both the environment and the well-being of residents.

The situation has caused various difficulties for residents over the past few years, including disruptions to the sewage system, wastewater overflow and unpleasant odours that have affected daily comfort and raised concerns over health and safety.

The housing scheme, comprising 614 low-cost housing units and six rural shop lots, was developed by the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) through its subsidiary Majuperak Holdings Berhad (MHB) and has been occupied since 2006.

PKNPk chief executive Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak said the approved allocation would enable comprehensive repair works to be carried out before the system is handed over to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK).

“The issue that has long plagued residents will now be resolved comprehensively through swift action and carefully planned upgrading works in line with technical requirements and regulatory guidelines,” he said.

He added that the project reflects the state government’s ongoing commitment to realising the Perak Sejahtera 2030 aspiration and the Malaysia MADANI agenda, which emphasises sustainable urban development, a clean environment and public well-being.

Meanwhile, MHB group chief executive Muhammad Yazurin Sallij said the repair works would involve technical inspections using CCTV, replacement of damaged pipes and restoration of sewer alignment to ensure the system functions fully.

He said the system would subsequently be handed over to IWK and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) upon completion.

According to him, an open tender process will be carried out in accordance with the Malaysian Government Procurement Circular to ensure transparency and compliance with technical specifications.

The allocation was presented by the Tambun Member of Parliament, who is also the Prime Minister and Finance Minister, to PKNPk and representatives of residents at a ceremony held at the Kinta District and Land Office.
