Classical Bharatanatyam Comes to Ipoh This May

By Anne Das

Ipoh’s arts community will soon have the opportunity to enjoy the art of classical Bharatanatyam as Bharatha Kalaanjalii Malaysia presents Naatya Seva, with proceeds going to the Perak Association for the Intellectually Disabled.

The event will be held at the Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negeri Perak auditorium along Jalan Caldwell, Ipoh, on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 6.30pm.

Programme coordinator K. Nachemuthu said the performers will be students of Guru Shrimathi Meera Venugopal from Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. Guru Meera, who has received numerous honours, will present the performance with live musicians.

Audiences can expect a programme supported by live musicians, adding depth and immediacy to the performance in a traditional Bharatanatyam setting.

According to Nachemuthu, Bharatha Kalaanjalii Malaysia is organising the event in conjunction with the academy’s Golden Jubilee celebrations this year. He added that the evening is expected to be graced by distinguished guests and will feature performances that bring out the beauty of Bharatanatyam, a dance form often described as “the hidden language of the soul.”

Bharatha Kalaanjalii Malaysia marked its 50th anniversary in 2024 through major productions, including Swarnarekha, as part of its ongoing work in preserving and teaching Bharatanatyam to younger generations.

Profits from the programme will be channelled to PAFID, a Perak-based organisation that supports individuals with intellectual disabilities through care, education and community programmes.

The programme was recently launched at Sekolah Semangat Maju in Ipoh. Among those present were PAFID president Alex Loh Peng Wee, deputy president Bryan Tan Kang Shyong, well-wisher Datuk M. Karathu, and Associate Prof. Dr. Maran Marimuthu of Universiti Teknologi Petronas.

For those looking to enjoy the art of Bharatanatyam while supporting a local cause, Naatya Seva offers both. Get your seats today.
