Gerbang Malam Plagued With Illegal Parking Attendants

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: Despite being a major tourist attraction for over 20 years, it appears Gerbang Malam is still plagued by the same issue—the presence of illegal parking attendants (ulat parkir) who are tarnishing the image of Ipoh city.

A recent onsite survey found that these activities occur openly as early as 7:30 p.m.

Approximately six illegal parking attendants were observed stationed at specific spots around the Gerbang Malam area.

This situation has caused unease among visitors to the vicinity, particularly women traveling alone.

Ipoh resident Suraya Hamid said she frequently spots these individuals managing parking spaces when she visits Gerbang Malam.

“I think it is high time that enforcement officers or the relevant authorities conduct night patrols in this area. Alternatively, station an officer here periodically to monitor these activities.

“While the public can choose not to pay these illegal attendants, there is a sense of worry that they might do something to the vehicle. This is especially true for those coming alone.

“It seems the number of illegal attendants is increasing; this is public parking, not a private area. Why do they want to guard the parking?

“I am forced to park quite far from here to avoid encountering them. Authorities, please be concerned about this issue which has persisted for so long,” she said.

Previously, traders here have also voiced grievances and complaints regarding the illegal parking attendant issue, which remains difficult to curb despite numerous operations by the authorities.

They also urged for frequent patrols to be conducted to prevent the problem from continuing to spread.

Gerbang Malam has successfully enlivened the city’s nightlife and serves as an economic heartbeat for the local population.

It is a focal point for domestic and international tourists seeking unique items that represent Ipoh and Perak.
