Immediate measures taken to tackle flash floods in Persiaran Wira Jaya Barat

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: Immediate follow-up measures have been initiated to address the recurring flash floods affecting Persiaran Wira Jaya Barat 10 and 14A since early June.

Simpang Pulai assemblyman Wong Chai Yi said he visited the affected area with officials from the Ipoh City Council (MBI) and the developer to identify the cause of the flooding and determine the mitigation measures that need to be implemented without delay.

“Works will be carried out to clear tree branches and rubbish trapped in the monsoon drain near the bridge at Persiaran Wira Jaya Barat 14 to improve water flow.

“The drainage outlet system will also be upgraded to allow water to flow more efficiently.

“In addition, an embankment will be constructed in front of the development area to prevent floodwater from overflowing into the existing residential neighbourhood,” he said.

Wong added that a long-term solution is also being considered, involving the upgrading of the culvert beneath the bridge by replacing the existing twin culverts with a larger box culvert.

He said the proposed upgrade is expected to reduce the risk of debris becoming trapped while increasing the drainage system’s capacity during heavy rainfall.

“We will continue to monitor the implementation of these measures and hope that both the short-term and long-term solutions will help reduce the risk of flash floods and bring relief to residents,” he said.
