By Julian Matthews

My muse is a fugitive
My thoughts kidnapped, my words the ransom
I can’t unride this carousel of delusions
I am caught in a vortex rotating on a spindle of time
I am churning, burning, yearning
I am unlearning who I am

Identity is a falsity – you are never who you are
You never get where you’re going, you never arrive
Know thyself, say the sages
Who themselves know not themselves
I let go of line, meter, stanza, and rhyme
I orchestrate my own sentence
All instruments are tuned to lamentation
The universe hums its own hymn, regardless

Nothing makes sense
nothing needs to make sense
until it does, until the monotonous buzzing recedes
and I sense a coming becoming, a wave behave,
the timpani of an epiphany,
a revelation reveals itself

The wind turns the page, and I am at the bottom
of the well of understanding, drawing myself up
in a bucket of words, liquid and fluid
folding over me and into each other
reshaping the dream into inked reality
And then it’s done
