IPOH: After waiting for more than a year, a sinkhole beside a monsoon drain at the junction of Jalan Wira Jaya Timur 16, Taman Rapat Perdana, here, remains unrepaired and has continued to grow, posing a safety risk to road users.
A resident who only wished to be known as Abang Shah said the sinkhole, which was reported in December 2024, had become deeper and wider due to severe soil erosion caused by rain and damage to the nearby monsoon drain.
He said the situation was increasingly worrying as several minor accidents had occurred in the area, while a plastic barrier placed to prevent road users from approaching the sinkhole was damaged after being hit by a vehicle.
“The sinkhole, which was initially small, has continued to grow deeper and wider. If left unattended, it could become even larger and pose a danger to road users.
“The authorities have only placed plastic road barriers there for a long time without taking action to repair the damage,” he said.
Abang Shah said residents had lodged several complaints with the Ipoh City Council (MBI), but were frustrated that no repair work had been carried out to date.
“We are tired of lodging complaints with MBI as no action has been taken.
“From a safety perspective, the barrier used to prevent people from approaching the sinkhole is inadequate.
“The safety of residents using this road is clearly at risk, especially at night, particularly motorcyclists and cyclists,” he said.
He said the situation required immediate attention to prevent the sinkhole from growing further, especially if the rain continued.
“We urge MBI to come down to the site and inspect the sinkhole themselves before carrying out the necessary repair works.
“Residents hope immediate action will be taken before a more serious accident occurs, particularly involving motorcyclists, cyclists or motorists who may fail to notice the hazard at night,” he stressed.
