IPOH: The strength of a nation depends not only on economic growth and infrastructure development, but also on the ability of its people to preserve trust, unity and harmony.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said economic progress would mean little if people became increasingly divided.

“Perak recorded economic growth of 5.7 percent to RM91.5 billion last year, while approved investments reached RM15.76 billion, with the potential to create more than 10,000 job opportunities.

“Economic achievements must be translated into benefits that people can feel, rather than remaining merely figures in reports.

“People live with the jobs they have, the income they bring home, educational opportunities for their children and confidence in tomorrow,” he said in his speech at the Perak-level Merdeka Eve celebration at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah here tonight.

Saarani said the current generation also had a responsibility to ensure Malaysia became better than the country inherited from previous generations.

“The state government, through the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan, will continue to ensure development creates more opportunities for the people, particularly the younger generation,” he said.

He said the tourism sector was also an economic catalyst, with Perak recording 23.6 million domestic visitors last year.

The figure provided a spillover effect for traders, tourism product operators and local communities.

“Congratulations to Tourism Perak on being recognised as the Best State Tourism Promotion Board at the Tourism Industry Awards 2026.

“I hope these efforts will bring more visitors to Perak, create more opportunities and generate greater prosperity for the people.

“Ultimately, development only has meaning when the people can feel its benefits,” he said.
